Public Lecture: Has the Constitutional Court Killed the Gas Industry?

Natural gas is becoming an increasingly important part of South Africa’s economy, especially in support of renewable power generation as we transition to a lower carbon society.

However, a recent Constitutional Court decision on NERSA’s maximum gas prices may have put paid to gas industry investment. Initially, seven large gas customers took NERSA to court, but have they ended up leaving South Africa’s regulated energy markets with an intractable problem?

Wits Business School’s African Energy Leadership Centre (AELC) has invited three expert panellists to share their views on this development. They are:

  • Ms Nomfundo Maseti, Full-time Regulator at NERSA
  • Dr Stephen Labson, Managing Director of slEconomics
  • Professor Firoz Cachalia, Professor at Wits School of Law

Professor Rod Crompton, Head of the AELC, will facilitate the discussion. Click here for speaker bios
